Denmark holds a special place in my heart - my ancestors came from Schleswig-Holstein, the region which spans the German and Danish borders.

When photographing my portraits, I ask my subjects to bring in a symbol of their country, which is not always possible.

In this case David brought in this cap, a 'studenterhue', which in Denmark is a tradition that goes back to the mid-nineteenth century. It symbolises that the wearer has passed the final exam, Studentereksamen, in the Danish gymnasium (High school), and is qualified to study at the university. Danish students still wear these caps during the first few weeks of celebration following graduation. This was David's own cap from his time of graduation, and it introduced me to this aspect of danish tradition.

When I visited the region in July this year, I was lucky enough to spot a rowdy group of students wearing tha same style of hats, clearly celebrating their graduation. It was a real treat for me to have the insight to these celebrations!

The choice of stamp from 1935 was the Swan from the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale 'The Ugly Duckling' as one of the most iconic stories of Denmark.
